We are running out of ID for DMR 2017

Getting a lot of questions around why we are issuing 3100nnn for USA and 3020nnn for Canada instead of the State/Provincial specific ID's. There are a few simple reasons.

• We are running out of ID's, the old way of assigning ID's by state/prov isn't working
• Many states/provs have already reach nnnn999, There is no where else for them togo
• MCC numbering scheme was never designed for states/provs, This was a 'nice to have' made up system
• Brandmeister as of May 1st has decided to no longer route 1nnn MCC ID's

Fortunately the only real solution was to go to the base sequence of the country and start assigning the ID's sequentially. We have started with CAN and USA, but all countries will shortly follow, This solution has been implemented in the EU regions for some time. This is still only a short term solution, we will still eventually run out of ID's as there is finite list that will function with our system.

DIgital Amateur Radio FCS network explained

I'm new to all of this, and after searching, I'm having difficulty understanding the FCS network and how it al works.

I've been on the x reflector website, but it doesn't seem very intuitive or have much of a description, that I found, anyway.

Are there any resources that explain the system better? YouTube videos? Even basic info like, are the reflectors tied into local repeaters. Like IRLP or Echolink? Or are they just "chat rooms" for digital modes?

The Explosion of Digital and why it is growing

This subject of digital as in DMR is an Exploding system compared to anything in HAM Radio, bar none, and has been for many years as a dynamic mode that is often changing.   A mode that is challenging the HAM radio community's user base as it evolves. This compared to the stagnant water of any "anything" or mode in HAM Radio.

A network from it's inception that offered a single manufacture and commercial (public service) grade devices is now offering numerous manufactures, important to note that no other HAM Radio mode offers as many devices to select from in purchasing. The on "fire" prices are beneficial to the consumer as value for money, as found in the many affordable devices that are offered in Digital Mobile Radio. The cost of DMR device almost comparing and rival inferior FM analog transceivers.

Benefits include:  device firmware exploits from Travis to Ty all to the benefit of the end user or ham radio operator.  With dismal advances in any other aspect of the radio hobby this is welcome change and may stimulate old bones in other areas of the hobby.

To the surprise and joy of many in the DMR community the introduction of Hotspots and its popularity continue to evolve and explode the digital user base, with the ability to shift users moving to self empowered devices and also have the option to use the many repeaters as backup if available for communication tools.

Now, to the joy and relief of most digital users we have the flexibility of moving off a repeater that most often is or could be abusive by an inept individuals with a CB mentality.

DMR MARC network to be taken offline permanently in Germany

I regret the fact, that the DMR MARC network in Germany will be taken offline permanently on July 31st, 2017 according to the official website (german):

DMR-MARC and DMR Plus partnership (DMR Plus North America)

DMR Plus is the original network that developed tools to interconnect Hytera and Motorola repeaters. It has been popular in Europe for years but now, with the cooperation of DMR-MARC, it has finally arrived in North America and the South Pacific. The DMR Plus architecture is similar to D-Star. Users have talkgroups to converse, to disconnect, and to monitor channel status. Users choose from a large pool of reflectors and move back to the converse talkgroup for all QSOs.

The DMR-MARC and DMR Plus partnership is ideal. The DMR-MARC network is robust and reliable. The DMR Plus network is more aligned with experimentation and interoperability of technologies. Think of DMR Plus as the best possible implementation of the former DMR-MARC Sandbox.

1. Can I use the MOTOTRBO Anywhere app on DMR-MARC?
No. The app requires a $50,000 hardware gateway which we do not have.

2. Do I have to buy a DMR radio to use the network.
Yes.

3. Do I need a C-bridge to join the network?
No. Just apply to join the network and we will find a suitable master repeater for your peer repeater.

4. Do I need to make a voice ID on the network or is a numeric ID legal?
According to USA FCC rules, one must identify with voice every 10 minutes and at the end of the call. Other countries may have more lenient requirements. The GSM ID on your radio is nonetheless, not a legal ID.

5. Who is my local Motorola dealer? Do they offer "ham friendly" pricing?

6. Are used radios available?
Yes. Ebay has some.

7. Will my non-Motorola DMR radio work on the network?
For voice calls, yes, for roaming and texting maybe not. Some alternative brand radios are Vertex Standard, Tait, Kenwood, RCA, Connect Systems, Hytera, Harris, Kirisun, Simoco, Sepura, and BFDX. As long as the radio is DMR Tier II complaint, it'll work on our network.

8. Should I disable AGC on the network?

DMR-Marc Private call

Private call is disabled on many networks. On those where it works, you can call a contact by selecting them and pressing the PTT.

It's generally not used in ham radio because some networks forbid it.

DMRX is not difficult to scrape at all, just done a bit differently. In fact incredibly good stuff at DMRX. For example:

There's no masking going on at all. It's just that the data is loaded dynamically as JSON and rendered in your browser using JavaScript. The code is all very clean and orderly.

Poke around in the javascript for /api/ and you'll find a lot of good stuff in a format that's super easy for a computer to use. Way better than CSV.

DMR / D-STAR Gateway

The Germans have done it again!

From the folks that brought us the ircDDB network, we hear from Hans-Jürgen Barthen, DL5DI, that there is now a gateway between D-STAR (DCS Gateways) and Hytera DMR Repeaters using the AMBEServer with either the DV3000 or ThumbDV™.  This gateway is in use at a handful of DMR repeaters in Germany and Austria with systems soon to be implemented in Sweden and Switzerland.
You can download executables for the gateway and combine with the AMBEServer to create your own gateway. The software does D-STAR callsign to DMR radio ID mapping and transports audio between networks using the Hytera API.
Another step toward Universal Digital Radio from the community of amateur radio developers using products from NW Digital Radio.
